Genevieve Brown, Therapist
Helping you rebuild your relationship with yourself.
“Painful memories can feel very real, but with time and guidance, the body learns it’s not reliving the past. Healing happens as we gently work through those memories together and help the body learn it is capable of holding the feelings the memories produce. “
Specialization
I specialize in the reforming of an individual’s relationship with themselves. The way a person relates to themselves can determine whether their response to stress is healthy or harmful. Simply put, how you think about yourself impacts how quickly you can problem-solve, heal, and recover from stressful situations.
- Grief– Loss affects everyone differently. It can shake our sense of identity, our place in the world, and what comes next. I help clients explore the thoughts and feelings grief brings and guide them toward finding direction in their new reality
- Stress and Anxiety– Stress and anxiety are natural responses to significant events, but when prolonged, they can drain the body and lead to health problems. I help clients identify the sources of their stress, understand its meaning, and develop actionable plans to manage symptoms. By learning about stress, clients gain confidence in trusting themselves to make the best choices moving forward.
- Trauma– Trauma can disrupt how we see ourselves, others, and the world. Often, coping responses that once helped become obstacles later on, leaving people feeling out of control, grieving their former selves, and constantly on edge. I help clients reconnect with who they are now and build new, healthy behaviors to support lasting change.
Experience
My diverse experience within the mental health services has solidified the importance of listening to what a person needs from me. I am like a Mixed Martial Artist (MMA) fighter of the therapy world, called an eclectic therapist. My study of multiple therapy types helps me be flexible and versatile in the approach I have with clients.
I have worked with clients, from teenagers to seniors, who have come to me because something significant happened or they got to a point where they could no longer sustain their ways of coping with their situation. With a bit of guidance, my clients have been able to identify what they needed from their life to make it more meaningful, to reduce the pressure they were under, or to find purpose in the struggles they experienced.
It has been my experience that when an individual comes into therapy, they tend to have more than one concern that they would like to work on. I have adapted the perspective that by teaching someone how to think flexibly, they can take what they have learned in a session and apply it to other situations not discussed in the session.
- By suggesting choices that could be made
- By offering a perspective that could reduce suffering
- By supporting you while you learn new strategies to move forward
- By supplying ideas for possible growth
- By breaking down what seems like a large task into manageable steps
- Explore why you respond to others the way you do,
- Discover how to respond to situations in a way that you do not have to feel guilty
- Build your self image so you can believe that you are worthy of love, connection, and respect.
- If need be, I can also direct you as to how you can build boundaries that could keep you safe in a turbulent environment.
My personal goal is to teach my clients how to be their own therapist, and then to settle into a supportive role that troubleshoots issues with them.
