Men's Anger Management Group

Overview

Feeling like your anger is getting the better of you lately? You’re not alone. Many men struggle with managing their anger in healthy ways, and it can take a toll on our relationships, careers, and overall well-being. This program is designed specifically for adult men like yourself who are ready to take control of their anger and learn techniques to handle it more constructively.

What is the purpose of the group?

To provide a structured approach to managing anger by specifically addressing its roots in fear and other emotions. This will all be done in a supportive environment that builds personal growth and reflection.

Who is this group for?

This group is for men who are having trouble understanding why their Anger seems to be taking over their lives.

Your Anger:

  • may be creating distance between you and your Wife and children,
  • may be causing trouble for you at work, or
  • may even be driving a wedge between you and your friends.

If you are struggling with how Anger has become the emotion that you are defaulting to consistently, this group is meant for you.

How do we view anger?

Whether it is expressed inwardly or outwardly, Anger is an emotional reaction to a thought, behaviour or another emotion. Men have a way of using and expressing Anger that is unique from the way Women use and express it. Although there may be similarities, Men will often use anger to mask vulnerability, protect others, accomplish goals, and improve upon themselves. We believe that there is a very healthy expression of Anger that Men can tap into for their betterment but there is a tendency to use it in more unhealthy ways. This will be discussed in detail during the course.

Key Elements to Group Therapy:

Therapy Groups are different than Support Groups in a few ways. It is important to understand the differences before you choose to participate in either groups.

Group therapy revolves around treating multiple clients with similar experiences at once. The group is led by a therapist trained to provide therapy in a group setting. The therapist would be able to use therapeutic techniques such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) as well as others. Activities and discussions would be structured to address the group’s needs as a whole as well as each individual. The cohesion of the group members is created through activities and discussions.

Support Groups can be facilitated by peers or a trained therapist and they prioritize taking advantage of a collective of perspectives to discuss shared life experiences. It is informal has an open discussions format and emphasize empathy and social connection.

Chris Brown (HBSc, MACP, RP(Qualifying) has been trained in and has been facilitating men’s mental health groups for over 7 years.

Additionally, Chris specializes in men’s mental health. Although there are no specific training for therapists regarding men’s mental health, it has been Chris’ personal mission to learn as much as he could from what peer-reviewed research there is. His findings in the psychological literature in combination with his lived experiences and training in the facilitation of groups, makes Chris and invaluable person to meet for any man who has sought out therapeutic support.

The overarching goal of the group is to increase the awareness of the processes a person goes through during anger in order to improve a person’s ability choose how to respond to their anger.

Confidentiality is a large part of the Anger Management Group. Members must be able to feel that they can share their thoughts and feelings without being fearful as to who else will hear of their story. Each member is required to sign a confidentiality form. Violation of group confidentiality agreement would be openly discussed in the group and if not resolved, it could result in the client leaving the Men’s Therapy Group with no refund.

The Men’s Anger Management Group is a therapy group. Chris will be offering the men of the group his skills in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Minfulness Techniques, Emotional Regulation Techniques and his well of knowledge regarding men’s mental health. The theories and techniques are not all listed here, but they are all presented to group members with men’s perspective in mind.

The Men’s Anger Management Group is structured to benefit the group as a whole. The group sessions will start with a few minutes to touch base on how everyone’s week has been and see if anyone had any questions or issues from the previous session(s). The purpose of this is to increase comfort between members and to create group cohesion and collaboration. Chris would then set the topic for the day, explain the exercise/technique/strategy, facilitate conversation regarding the topic and exercise/technique/strategy, explain any homework (if any), then finally check-in with everyone to see how they are doing and if they need individual time with Chris.

Sessions will be 2 hours long in the evening on a weekly basis.
